Established in 2014, South Austin Brewery’s goal  was to create the best, great tasting craft beer that recognizes and pays tribute to Austin’s music scene and local culture. If you check their label and can designs, you’ll notice that it all depict the Austin guitar, and a music grade pick is very visible on their canned six packs.

No wonder SAB  is widely known for supporting the local music scene, and have held countless live performances since it was established. Quick tip: purchase tickets to their live band performances in advance – it’s much cheaper than buying it at the gates.

A bit of a heads up – glasses here can be quite small, but the beers are big in taste and flavor. The Golden Ale has a 7.8%  ABV, and the Saison brings it up to 8%, two times stronger than your usual light beer

Events

One very noteworthy event that SAB holds regularly is the monthly Up and Down Tour in conjunction with Casa Brasil Coffee Roasters. Guests are treated to a nice breakfast and some coffee “Did you knows?” at Casa Brasil. Then they’re taken to an awesome tour of SAB’s facilities. Here tour attendees get to see the brewing process up close and personal.

Insider Tip

Groovy Sundays! Yay! The name alone would really make you head to SAB to grab some delectable craft beers instead of lazing around some park on a Sunday afternoon. The event includes the much-talked about live gigs, awesome food trucks, and great deals on some of the most satisfying craft beers in Austin. For $10, you take home a nice tulip glass and four beer options.

The Brews

Kol’ Beer
Kolsh
ABV: 5.0%
Made using 100% unadulterated German pilsner malt, this is a kolsch-style craft beer brewed with the greatest beers of Cologne in mind. Kol’ beer has a subtle malt profile perfectly balanced with just the hop content. It pours crystal clear gold crowned with a fluffy bright white head. Mild grassy and herbal aroma dominate with fruity underpinnings and a bit of a grainy finish.

Evel Ale
All American Blonde Ale
ABV: 4.7%
It’s an easy drinking blonde ale with a light body. Evel Ale has a light hoppy flavor and finely tuned bitter taste. The name says it all, it’s a homage to the ultimate motorcycle daredevil of our time as much as it a toast to individuality and passion. Brewed with only the finest All American ingredients, this blond ale is light, but has tons of personality. Does an excellent job of taking you back to simpler times.

TPA
Session IPA
ABV: 5.5%
South Austin Brewery’s love for hops and desire for drinkability and balance are embodied in this session IPA. Copious amounts of American hops added late in the brewing process help create a big hop taste and aroma while balancing out the bitterness level. TPA’s alcohol content is kept in medium to low levels so it can be enjoyed to its fullest.

TPA pours a hazy golden orange glow accompanied by creamy, ivory white head. It has that bready, smooth taste followed by hints of caramel and apple at the end. Finishes clean, crisp and dry like a fresh $100 bill.

6 String Saison
Saison
ABV: 8%
South Austin Brewery’s version of farmhouse ale brewed Franco-Belgian style. It’s easy to put this up along with the Imperials and Double Saison. Made using only the best quality English hops and Belgian pilsen malt, the real flavor of 6 String Saison is provided by the yeast. Brewed at temperatures slightly higher than their other brews, the yeast strain creates a complex blend of banana, peach, and black pepper.

Crossroads
Stout
ABV: 6.8%
It’s their coffee stout, traditionally brewed with a distinct mix chocolate malts, oats and roasted barley. Fresh micro-lot, Brazilian coffee (courtesy of Casa Brasil) is infused infused in the brew after the fermentation process is complete. Crossroads pours a jet black color topped off with a nice, frothy, thick tan head.

Luckenbock
Bock
ABV: 7.0%
Inspired by traditional German bock brewing techniques, Luckenbock has a big maltiness made possible by a hefty amount of caramel, Munich, and Vienna malts. European hops were added sparingly to mute the sweetness while letting the maltiness shine through. South Austin Brewery’s bock is fermented in cold temperatures, aged for a longer period to create the crisp, clean mouthfeel you’d expect from a good German-style lager.
