The Alley Theatre at the University of Houston showcases some of the best talent that the University has to offer. By attending a play here, not only will you be setting yourself up for a night of entertainment, but you’ll also be supporting the University and its art program.

Plays at the Alley

The 2014-2015 season at the Alley is going to be a hoot, a holler, and a heartache for those who attend. With plays ranging from the funny side of things to the more dramatic and emotional, the theatre has prepared a wide array of genres for its audience. A holiday favorite to look forward to is A Christmas Carol – A Ghost Story of Christmas, which provides a powerful lesson about holiday spirit. Another favorite to plan on is All My Sons, based on Arthur Miller’s (author of Death of a Salesman) first success. This play might be more suitable for adults, as some of the themes (loss, pain, and love) are fairly mature.

To lighten things up, make sure to attend the theatre’s production of Shakespeare’s greatest comedy, As You Like It. This is a delightful story about the power of friendship and love, and shows the reunification of everyone from fathers and daughters to lovers throughout the play. Finally, finish the season out with The Foreigner, which has been dubbed a “marvelously funny comedy.”

An Affordable and Fun Night Out

While you may be tempted to do the usual dinner and a movie as your means of relaxation this weekend, wouldn’t going to a play be a little more entertaining and unique? And, with tickets starting at just $26 during the week (discounts for those who qualify), this is an evening that’s highly affordable. (Tickets on the weekends are more expensive, and start at $39).

The Theatre Experience

The theatre at the Alley is by no means monstrous–it’s small and intimate, cozy and comfortable, and makes for a fantastic view of the stage regardless of where your seat is located. While the theatre is a bit dated and the bathrooms are a bit run down, nothing will be able to attract from how awesome the show itself is. The actors and actresses are always highly skilled and entertaining, and are great at engaging the audience. The plays are also very inventive and original, putting a unique spin on classic stories. Anyone is welcome to the theatre, children included. Keep in mind though–as stated before–some of the plays control adults themes that might not be suitable for young children.

To Stave Off Your Appetite

While the Alley Theatre doesn’t have a restaurant, there is a small snack bar with snacks and drinks that you purchase to hold off your hunger during the performance. The snack bar is rumored to be cash only though, so make sure you bring a loaded wallet.

Do something unique and fun– see a play at the Alley Theatre! Your mind (and your date) will thank you!
