Located in Africa, Ethiopia is one of the most populated countries in the world and also has one of the fasted growing economies. The country is home to many unique cultural traditions, and luckily for those of us living in the United States, some delicious dishes. If you want to have a food experience that’s both cultural and out of the ordinary, the Blue Nile Ethiopian restaurant offers some of the best Ethiopian food in Houston.

How to Eat

Before you choose to go to this restaurant, there’s something you should know about Ethiopian food: traditionally, this food is all eaten with the hands, not utensils. As most dishes are ordered and shared family style, this can be a bit problematic for the germ-o-phobic people out there. However, if you have no qualms about digging in with your fingers, you’ll love it at this restaurant.

What to Eat

Now that you’re in the know about how this food is consumed, here are a few recommendations on what to order—

Depending upon your dietary and taste preferences (vegetarian, beef, poultry, fish, or even lamb), the menu here has something for everyone. If you’re a vegetarian and enjoy a bit of zing in your food, opt for the Shirro Fitfit, which consists of diced onions, jalapenos, bell peppers, peas flour, herbs and spices, and pieces of Injera (sourdough flatbread). If you’re a meat eater on the other hand, the Dulet is an Ethiopian delicacy of lamb tripe, lamb liver, and beef that’s been sautéed with butter, hot pepper, and herbs. It’s delicious.

When to Go

If you go during lunch or on Sundays, you’ll find a bunch of specials for great food at a great price at the Blue Nile. Lunch specials are served from 11 AM to 3 PM Monday through Friday, and include seven different plate options, a salad, and two types of desserts that patrons may select from. The $85 dollar Sunday special is great for a group and includes many different flavors and ingredients. Make sure you try some Ethiopian coffee after your meal.

Good for Groups

Since so many of these dishes are served family style, this restaurant is a great place to go with your family, a large group of friends, or even a work outing if you’re comfortable sharing dishes with your coworkers. In addition to that, the owner of this restaurant is great at accommodating large parties, and if enough notice is given in advance, she’ll gladly make whatever arrangements necessary to keep your party happy.

While the location of this restaurant may seem a bit shady, as soon as you’re in the restaurant you’ll be amazed by the quality of service, the exceptional food, and the warm and welcoming ambiance that you’ll experience.
