Visit Zoo Lights, one of the city’s newest holiday traditions. The Houston Zoo is decorated with one million more lights this year.  With life-size animal sculptures and other fun exhibits, there’s something for everyone in this family friendly event.

This years course is shorter and more richly decorated.  Less walking for you. And it circles through the big cats area which s always fun to see.

Among the new displays are giant lighted kaleidoscope that is choreographed to music and a Dollhouse Village where Thomas the Tank Engine cruises down four separate tracks.

The Dollhouse Village, as were all the zoo’s displays, created by artist of Lonnie Hanzon.

Returning to the delight of all is Holly Berry, the 1958 Cadillac that lights up in time with holiday tunes.

If you’ve got a smart phone, consider downloading the Houston Zoo app, which includes a mobile tour of Zoo Lights.

Zoo Lights is open 6-10 p.m. through Jan. 4 (with the exception of Dec. 24-25). Admission is $12 (free for ages younger than 2); last entry at 9 p.m.

Snacks and Treats Galore

Enjoy traditional treats of the season, like hot chocolate, funnel cakes, sticky buns, turkey legs, and s’mores as you stroll through lighted pathways. Wine and beer will also be available. Look for the candy cane striped columns near the center of the Zoo to find Cypress Circle, the place to go for holiday snacks.

You can also sit down for a meal of more traditional Zoo fare like hot dogs, chicken strips, hamburgers, salads, and more at Macaw Café near the Zoo’s front entrance.

Spread some holiday cheer to the animals at the Houston Zoo – give them the Gift of Grub!
