Opened by one of the most famous chefs in Latin America, Aquiles Chavez, La Fisheria in the Heights is one of Houston’s newer restaurants. The chef, who has three TV shows, made the permanent move to Houston with his family in order to open the Mexican seafood restaurant, which is featured on one of his shows.

Family Friendly Dining. Er, Kinda.

There are a lot of restaurants in Houston that, as good as they are, if you brought your kids, you might get some snooty looks from other diners. At La Fisheria, however, you’ll be able to enjoy fine foods and an elegant atmosphere all with your most precious cargo in tow—your children (read on for exceptions to this rule). The restaurant offers a kids’ menu with plenty of great options for the little ones, including cheese pizza, fried shrimp, Mexican mac and cheese, flautitas, chicken fingers, and fish sticks. However, there is a no-kid rule that must be followed: after 7 PM, only children over the age of eight are permitted, so make sure to call a babysitter if you’re going for a meal other than lunch or have children younger than eight in your family. However, at any other time of the day, the youngest amongst us are welcome.

Best Lunch in Houston

Okay, so maybe La Fisheria doesn’t offer the best lunch in Houston, but it does offer a pretty darn good one. The biggest category of food items you’ll find on the lunch menu are taco options. All of the corn tortillas that are used for the tacos are homemade, making them a top recommendation. Try the pulled pork tacos, the fish tacos, or the taco combination platter with a shrimp, al pastor, and lobster taco, of course served with rice and beans. If you don’t go for the taco, the fish sandwich with chipotle dressing and yucca chips is perfection.

Mojito Madness

The heading pretty much says it all, but the mojitos are amazing here. If you’re ordering an alcoholic beverage, don’t waste your time on anything else; the mojito will blow it out of the water.

Top Entrée Items

If you go for dinner, there are some entrée items that shouldn’t be missed. Try the lobster tail risotto, the red snapper, the achiote grilled fish, the octopus for a starter, or the fettuccini alfredo with shrimp. All are amazingly good. The prices are a little high, but for fresh seafood, they’re pretty on par with what you’d find anywhere else for a similar quality catch.

Cute Patio

This patio makes you feel as if you’re on the beach itself. Large and colorful beach umbrellas provide shade for wooden chair and table sets, all set against a bright orange and blue backdrop. There are even a couple bright red rotund chairs available for those who feel like lounging while sipping on a cocktail.
