If the words “sandwich and café” conjure up images of tuna melts, turkey clubs, warm bowls of tomato soup, and chocolate brownies, you couldn’t be more off base from the cuisine that’s offered at Les Givral’s. While Les Givral’s is certainly an establishment that offers coffee and sandwiches, it’s a Vietnamese barbeque restaurant that puts a fun spin on the traditional café stereotype.

The Sandwich Menu

Since this is a sandwich shop, it’s only fitting that we first provide a rundown of what types of sandwiches, or banh mi, a diner can choose from—although, be aware that sandwiches are only one of the delicious food items offered at Les Givral’s. If you’re a banh mi maniac, the chargrilled BBQ pork sandwich, the meatball sandwich, and the creative tofu sandwich will all thrill you. There are also steamed pork, shredded chicken, fish and tomato sauce, and chargrilled beef sandwiches, and more.

Sweet $$

More than the sandwiches, you’ll love the prices as Les Givral’s, where sandwiches start at $2.50 and run up to a whopping $4.00. In fact, the most expensive thing on the menu—not a sandwich—is only $7.45.

Vietnamese Delights

In addition to all of the yummy sandwich choices here, you’ll also find some classic Vietnamese dishes to choose from, including rice noodle soups, spring rolls, rice sheets, vermicelli, and rice. Our favorites include the special fried rice, the chargrilled shrimp vermicelli, the steamed rice sheets topped with chargrilled pork, the beef stew, and the imperial rolls. Oh, and the pho soup is reported to be some of the best pho in all of Texas.

A Cup of Joe

The Vietnamese coffee is not only some of the most delicious coffee you’ll find in Houston, but also some of the most affordable. The joe here is strong and sweet, with just the perfect amount of condensed milk. A large one is only $2.75, making it a far better deal than the local Starbucks.

Know the How-To

When you walk into Les Givral’s, there’s a good chance it’ll be packed beyond belief. The tables may be messy due to the fact that people are coming and going faster than you can count, and there’s a possibility that the line for the food counter will be out the door. However, don’t let the chaos of the place overwhelm you; you’ll regret it if you decide to leave due to the apparent lack of order. Wait in line, and then head up to the register where you’ll place your order with the cashier. Hot dishes they’ll serve, but sandwiches you pick up at the front. Napkins, utensils, and the like are all grab-your-own. As such, don’t expect a lot of service.

For delicious and cheap bahn mi, Les Givral’s has you covered. We challenge you to go here and not have the hankering to return again and again.
