The History of Crepes

Cooked from flour and resembling an ultra-thin pancake, crepes are a staple of French cooking. The word “crepe,” is also French, and derives from the Latin word “crispa,” or curled. Crepes are typically filled with something sweet–such as fruit or chocolate–or something savory–likes eggs or cheese. Despite the fact that these delicious crepe-ations originate from France, they’re eaten all over the world and are a popular breakfast, lunch, and dessert item in America. A honeymoon trip to France for lovebirds Sean Carroll and his wife inspired Melange Creperie in Houston. For some of the best crepes you’ve ever had, this creperie has you covered.

It’s a Food Truck

While the fact that this restaurant’s elegant name and product doesn’t go hand-in-hand with its base of operations—a food truck in Montrose—you’ll love it here regardless. While a food truck might not be the classiest venue around, the crepes are amazing, and being able to take your food to go is a nice feature of any food truck.

Both Savory and Sweet

The menu is pretty simple here, and patrons have their choice of a crepe that’s “mélange a dux,” or filled with two ingredients or “mélange a trois,” meaing a crepe that’s filled with three ingredients. The ingredient options are changed on a rotating weekly menu, but there are both sweet and savory crepe-filler options. However, there are a few standard menu items that are always available, including Nutella, bananas, ham, egg, and cheese.

A Local Favorite

Not only is this little crepe truck loved by locals, but it is also a big supporter of the local economy, as the majority of its products derive from local sources. While using local products isn’t always possible for Melange Creperie, they try to do so whenever they can.

Limited Hours

Despite how delicious these crepes are, Melange Creperie maintains limited hours, much to the chagrin of the community. The hours posted on their website are Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 9AM to 2PM, although they’re also open Thursday through Monday from 7AM to 1PM. If you have a special event that you’d like crepes for, though, they do offer a catering service with enough notice given in advance.

Must Try Items

Depending upon the day of the week that you visit, here are some must-try menu items—

  • The BLT crepes;
  • The Nutella and strawberry crepes;
  • The Saag Paneer crepes (super original!);
  • The lemon curd crepes;
  • The tomato and caprese crepes; and/or
  • The spinach, onion, and goat cheese crepe (with hot sauce).

Keep in mind that this place gets really busy, and it’s not uncommon for there to be a wait of 30 minutes or more. If you want to be served quickly, get there when they open—it makes for a yummy breakfast. Also, make sure to bring cash, as credit cards are a no-no at this establishment.
