If You’re Looking for Italian

Riva’s is a fun and friendly place for Houston locals and visitors alike to go to for the quintessential neighborhood Italian food.  Its Montrose location has been a staple for many people for years.  In true Italian style, you’ll get whopping portions of homemade pasta dishes including Penne, Capellini, and Fettuccine and all meals come with amazing garlic bread, soup, and a salad.  You can also try out some other Italian favorites like eggplant parmesan or chicken funchezzi.

Pair Your Meal with A Drink

Italians love having a wine with their dinner and with a full bar available, there’s no reason you shouldn’t either.  There’s a good selection of drinks and the wine can transport you to another time and place.  You can even eat at the delightfully cheerful bar if you want or take it to the outdoor patio area.

Fantastic Dessert

It’s hard to imagine you’ll have any room for dessert after eating plates full of pasta and piles of garlic bread, but you should try and save some space for one of the phenomenal desserts.  One of the best is the Tiramisu, with thin layers of pressed, espresso-soaked ladyfingers and that Italian, creamy, mascarpone.  Even if it’s not Italian the tres leches is also worth a taste.

Easy on the Wallet

One of the great things about the giant portions is that they don’t cost very much. Everything is very reasonably priced and you can have a full meal for a couple plus a bottle of wine for less than 60 bucks.  You really can’t beat the prices when almost everything is under $10.  Keep in mind that it’s not just the entree that you’re getting; it’s easy to fill up with the plentiful garlic bread and servings of soup and salad that arrive with it.  Without a doubt it’s the best Italian bang for your buck.

Stop by For Brunch

Maybe you don’t think of Italian when you want fun brunch places to go to, but you can’t beat the prices and the size of the dishes here normally, so there’s no reason to expect you’d be able to during brunch, either.  It’s only $10 for all you can drink so watch out for that bottomless Sunday mimosa while you are chowing down on the killer eggs and other bomb breakfast/lunch foods.

A Hole-in-the-Wall Atmosphere

They sometimes have some interesting, tacky decoration choices — like bobbles of Christmas lights and hodgepodge of tables in a converted house — but that’s all part of the charm.  It’s a great place for any occasion which is why on any given night you’ll get an eclectic mix of casual and formal attire.  Overall, most people will find this unique place is quite cozy and cute.  If you’re stuffy you may want to consider other options.

The Friendliest Staff

Everyone has their nights that they’re off, but by and large, you couldn’t really ask for a more fun or friendlier staff than the ones at Riva’s.  They are very attentive from the moment you walk in and eager to share which dishes are the best.  You can get quite a mix here, with some waiters that are very sweet and perhaps a bit shy, or you can have some friendly banter with the wise-cracking owner.  It’s all part of what makes this place and experience.
