The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge is a large, federally operated wildlife refuge that is available for exploration and enjoyment all year long.

You can take your bikes, canoes and/or pets, and experience the hundreds of acres of different animal and plant habitats.  There are a number of rules about the refuge that are worth reading in advance, like the fact that your pets have to be on leashes, and you can’t feed the animals, but the refuge is a very special place and you can hike, bike, canoe, and fish in certain areas.

In addition to being beautiful, the refuge is absolutely free and open to the public. It’s open all day, all year long, except on federal holidays.
