For those who are nuts about art, the San Antonio Museum of Art is one of the neatest places in San Antonio to enjoy it. On the Riverwalk (only a 30 minute walk from downtown!) this gem of a place is a great way to spend an afternoon.
What the Museum is Renowned For
One of the coolest things about the museum of art is the building that’s its housed in. The museum is now what once was the Lone Star Brewery, a historical site here in San Antonio. The museum is famous for its eclectic collation, which includes works of Asian, Mediterranean, Texan, regional, and Latin American art. There is also American art, contemporary art, European art, Islam art, and Oceanic art as well.
Exhibitions that You Must See
The museum has held some amazing exhibitions over the years, and is planning on housing some pretty exciting upcoming ones, too. For example, exhibitions that are planned for the second half of 2014 and early part of 2015 include Raices Americanas: Recent Acquisitons of Pre-Columbian Art; Nelson Rockefeller’s Picassos: Tapestries Commission for Kykuit; and Ancient to Modern: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics and Their Sources. If you are a person who’s constantly on the hunt for new and exciting things in the world of art, the exhibitions here are sure to delight.
Events Throughout the Year
In addition to the wonderful collections and exhibitions that visitors to the museum can enjoy, there are also some awesome events that are worth checking out. For example, don’t miss out on weekend meditation in the Japanese Gallery, or the Oceanic art tiki party. Some other fun events include French vocal chamber music, sketching in the galleries, books’ seminars, pre-k-12 educator workshops, and more.
Hours and Costs
The museum is open Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 AM to 9 PM; Wednesday and Thursday from 10 AM to 5 PM; Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM, and closed on Monday. If you are looking for a cheap date idea or an inexpensive family outing, the museum is free Tuesdays from 4 PM to 9 PM, and Saturdays from 10 AM to 12 PM. On other days/times, adults are $10, seniors are $7, students and military members are $5, and children under 12 are free.
For Those Who Want to Learn More
For those who want to learn more about art, there are programs for children and families, adults, college students, and educators that are offered by the museum. If you have a child who loves art, consider signing him or her up for the museum’s summer youth program, which does a plethora of fun activities, including painting, drawing, storytelling, music, creating writing, and more. Or, if you’re a parent who has decided to homeschool your child, attend one of the Homeschool Student Workshops with your child to learn about the museum’s collection, and get some great ideas for art at home.
Whether you need a rainy day activity that will entertain everyone, or a unique date idea that will earn you some sophistication points with the apple of your eye, check out the San Antonio Museum of Art.
