To confine German food to the likes of beer and sausages is a serious mistake; while the country of Germany certainly make great sausage and knows how to brew fantastic beer, German food is so much more than that. For a German experience in Texas that’s nearly as good as what you’d experience in Germany itself, the Bavarian Restaurant in San Antonio is ready to serve.

Schnitzel, Schnitzel, and More Schnitzel

Okay, so just as stereotypical as beer and sausages is schnitzel, but the schnitzel is so amazing here that it deserves to be mentioned again and again. Try the traditional wiener schnitzel–breaded or unbreaded (your preference) pork loin that’s pan fried–or go for something more adventurous like the Jager schnitzel (schnitzel with mushroom and gravy), the Rahm schnitzel (schnitzel with heavy cream sauce and mushrooms), the Gypsy schnitzel (schnitzel with gravy and veggies), the Holsteiner schnitzel (schnitzel with two eggs and capers), or the Schweizer schnitzel (schnitzel with melted cheese on top). When it comes to schnitzel, these folks clearly aren’t messing around.

Deli Favorites

Like any good German restaurant, you’ll find some popular deli-style favorites on the menu here. Try the reuben sandwich, the smoked salami sandwich, the soup of the day (which is always great), or the chef salad with ham, swiss cheese, eggs, and rye bread.

We Insist That You Try….

There are a couple things on this menu that we must absolutely insist upon you trying. First of all, the Cordon Bleu with Spatzel will probably be the most delicious Cordon Bleu you’ll ever eat. It’s juicy, it’s meaty, and it’s cooked just right. The Curry Bratwurst is also a must if you’re set on having bratwurst here, and is so juicy it’ll explode with flavor upon biting into it. And, for dessert, you HAVE to get a slice of the Heavenly Hazelnut Chocolate Cake. This cake is layer upon layer (eight, to be exact) of deliciousness, and is probably too rich for one person alone, so ask for two forks.

You’re Going to Be Full

The portion sizes here are huge. Like too-big-to-finish-alone huge. You’ll probably want to share a couple things, or ask for a to go box. Or, come hungry and challenge yourself to finishing every last bite. The prices are for most entrees are under $10 per item, making this a great place to fill up for cheap. Plus, all entrees are served with oven fried potatoes (which are sooo good), salad, and rye bread.

Family-Quality Service

Not only are the portions huge and the food amazing, but the service here is friendly, sweet, and makes the whole experience even that much more worth while. Don’t be surprised if the chef or owner makes his way to your table to ask about the food and share some stories from him homeland. While the wait for the food can sometimes be a bit long, the happy atmosphere of this place completely makes up for it. Oh, and did we mention they have real German beer, too?
