Back to an Earlier Time
If the thought of going to drive-in movie theatre, eating popcorn in the back of a truck, chewing on RedVines, and beating off the mosquitos takes you back to your childhood or teenage years, you’re not alone–drive-ins are a bit nostalgic for all of us. Happily, though, you can relieve the wonder years by heading to South Bay Drive-in in San Diego, the perfect place for adults and kids alike.
It’s the Same as it’s Always Been
For an admission price of $8 each for adults and $1 for kids, you can spend date night or family night at the South Bay Drive-In, a 1950’s outdoor theater where you can watch a movie from your car, or from a lawn chair, or blanket in the back of a pickup truck. Originally opened in 1958, not much has changed from the feeling of this quaint theatre. The best thing about South Bay is that you get not one, but two movies for the admission price! You can also bring a picnic, your own snacks, or purchase items from the snack bar. The snack bar has some “Mexican” food like churros and nachos, as well as classic American favorites including burgers, hotdogs, french fries, popcorn, candy, soda, and more. If you head to the drive-in’s website, you can print off a coupon for a free small or medium fountain drink!
What’s Showing?
Movie selections vary, but include many new releases, and there are three screens to choose from. If you and your date decide that you are ready to move on after the first film, or if you’ve made dinner plans earlier in the evening, you are welcome to watch only one of the two movies. Pricing, however, stays the same. If you have kids that have been dying to go to the drive-in, there are using some kid-friendly movies playing back to back so the whole family can enjoy.
What You Need to Know Before You Go
It’s important to note that entrance to this theatre is cash-only. Alcohol is not allowed, so don’t bring any. You’re also not allowed to switch screens, so once you pick a movie, you’ve got to commit to it. The box office opens one hour before show time, and it’s recommended to arrive early to get a great spot. South Bay Drive-In is open every day of the year and closes only in extreme weather situations. The sound is transmitted through your car radio, but you can also bring a battery-powered radio as well if you prefer.
This weekend, do something new and head to the drive-in to watch your favorite movie rather than the same old boring theater. Bring a blanket, bring some snacks, and bring your favorite person to cuddle up and get cozy with during the film.
