The name of this Hillsborough River canoe and kayak company is no joke.  Canoe Escape makes exploring the Hillsborough River by boat a true escape into the vibrant wilderness of the river, which is full of animal and plant wildlife.  Canoe Escape offers a variety of self-guided tours, ranging from two hours to six hours long, that all include  the route, a map, and drop-off and pick-up.  You can also rent canoes or kayaks by the hour, and always have the option to choose from a one-person or two-person vessel.

All rentals include life jackets, paddles, and very basic instruction, but you will need to bring water, snacks (or a picnic lunch), sunscreen, a hat, bug repellent, a camera, and $2 for parking.  If you want to fish, don’t forget your Florida fishing license, and fishing gear, of course. Their Moonlight Trips are highly recommended, are a little bit more expensive, and require that you bring a flashlight or headlamp (preferably red light).

No matter what you choose, you are guaranteed to see many different animals – alligators, a variety of birds, turtles, fish, snakes, and more – on any of the canoe “adventures.” Be sure to read over the basic safety rules online. Call and make a reservation first, and be sure to find out when the last pick-up time is for your tour. Canoe Escape opens every day at 9:00am.
