San Antonio is typically regarded as a place that’s great for adults. There’s plenty of nightlife, lots of bars, and a slew of delicious restaurants that allow grownups to indulge and enjoy. Rarely, on the other hand, is San Antonio thought of as a kid-friendly or family-welcoming place. But, the Magik Theatre on Alamo Street may just change your mind about that–

What is the Magik Theatre?

The Magik Theatre is a kids’ theatre that aims at putting on performances that are amusing, educational, and teach a moral lesson. While the shows are designed for children, most adults find the theatre to be very delightful as well. Each show is captivating and mesmerizing, and is just the perfect amount of time for little ones (just over an hour on average).

Shows at the Magik Theatre

The Magik presents some great shows that are creative spins on classic kid favorites. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was a big hit at this theatre, for example. Other shows that they’ve put on (or are planning to put on) for the 2014 – 2015 season include Shrek the Musical, Miss Nelson is Missing, Junie B. Jones, Pinkalicious, Elephant’s Piggie, Magic Tree House, Mercy Watson, and Flat Stanely.

Ticket Prices

Tickets are very reasonably priced at the Magik. For adults and children alike, tickets are $10. For lap-sitters (babies under the age of 2), tickets are free. And for the grandma or grandpa who wants to take their grandbaby to a show, ticket prices are $1 off if over the age of 60. Because your child is guaranteed to love this theatre, you may want to consider buying a season pass. A pass is $125 for 28 tickets, which is a fabulous deal! Don’t forget though, just because you have a season pass, you still need to make a reservation for a show you want to see! If you don’t, you risk forfeiting a spot.

Good Things to Know Before Going

As mentioned above, reservations are required for season pass holders. Additionally, seats are not assigned on Fridays and Saturdays, so make sure you get there at least 30 minutes early to snag a great spot. Their are concessions available that offer popcorn, candy, and soda if you want to purchase something before the show.

A Birthday Bash at the Magik Theatre

If your child loves this theatre and has been begging you for an awesome birthday party this year, a Magik birthday package might be just the ticket. The package is meant for no less than 15 people, and costs $15 per person. If you have more than 15 people, the price drops down to $12 for the extra folks. The package includes a show, a birthday announcement, a party room,  and a birthday gift for the child. For $30 per person, you can get the same thing plus cake, ice cream, decorations, invitations, and punch.

Before or After the Show…

If you were looking for a full-day family activity, the shows here are only about an hour long. However, the theatre is located right next the Hemisfair, which comes complete with an awesome playground. Go for a walk, let your kid run wild through the playground, or have a picnic on the grass.
