Zito’s Delicatessen & Sandwich Shop has been serving the San Antonio community great deli eats since their opening in 1974. This place isn’t just centrally located, but it’s also a popular favorite amongst those who call the city home. If you want to see what all the hype is about–or taste it, rather–then head to Zito’s today for one of their amazing sandwich creations.

Serious Sandwich Selection in San Antonio

The sandwich selection here is pretty massive, and so if you love sandwiches, this is the place to go. Unfortunately, the deli doesn’t offer a lot of other deli options, such as salads and a wide range of soups, or any entrees. But, it’s probably because the sandwiches are good enough to hold their own without the help of anything else. The sandwiches are all served on a toasted white or wheat roll, and come in large size (9 inches) or small size (6 inches).

Getting Creative with It

There are a lot of traditional favorites here, but the shop is also pretty creative with both their ingredients and sandwich names. Try the Ladies and Gents’ Delight with ham, provolone cheese, cheddar cheese, mustard, onion, chopped black olives, lettuce and tomato; the Holland Ham with ham, provolone cheese, mustard, lettuce, and tomato; or the Serious Sandwich, which is as big as it gets with salami, two types of ham, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, sliced black olives, and cheddar cheese served on Italian flat bread. Order this sandwich–the large size is designed for two people–for $14.95.

Traditional Favorites from Zito’s

If you don’t want something creative and prefer to stick with what you know and what delis are famous for, try the pastrami with provolone cheese, mustard, and tomato; the Italian meatball with spaghetti sauce and provolone cheese; the tuna with the basics; the club, loaded with lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, mustard, cheddar cheese, provolone cheese, roast beef, turkey, and ham; or the cheese sandwich–plenty of cheese, sprouts, and avocado.

Why You’ll Buy the Sides

Sides aren’t included with your sandwich at this shop, but we think you’ll buy them anyway for two reasons: 1. they’re cheap, and 2. they’re good. Get a cup of pinto beans for 85 cents, or a bowl for a buck fifty. You can also get macaroni salad, potato salad, pickle spears, spiced olives, or a dinner salad, too. Also, the soup of the day is always pretty delicious and very reasonably priced at $.145 a cup and $1.95 a bowl.

The Desserts that Make Them Famous

It’s not just their sandwiches that make Zito’s the place to go for lunch or early dinner–it’s their desserts, too! While the dessert menu isn’t lengthy, it sure is tasty. The baklava is a real crowd pleaser, the plain cheesecake is rich and creamy, the homemade brownie tastes exactly as a brownie is supposed to, and the chocolate cake will melt in your mouth. Better yet, all dessert options are priced under $2.00. In fact, a cookie or brownie is only fifty cents.
