Tex-Mex is a type of cuisine that’s described as having a blend of Mexican and Texan elements, combing the best of both worlds from the southern part of the United States. While many complain that Tex-Mex had ruined true Mexican food for Texas, others laud this hybrid creation as one of the best types of food available. For some of the best Tex-Mex in Houston, head to El Tiempo Cantina.

Where it All Started

When the Laurenzo family first moved to Houston in 1949, their first order of business was to start cooking. Starting with the basics—tamales, pastas, pizzas, tortillas, and spaghetti sauces—the pair was eventually able to open a family restaurant that still operates today. El Tiempo Cantina still remains a family owned establishment that has been refined over the years.

It’s Not Cheap

Most people associate Tex-Mex food with reasonably priced platters rather than fine dining. However, that’s not the case at this restaurant, where the prices are in line with other expensive restaurants in the area. Poblano Rellenos, while amazing, will cost you $16.99, and the fajitas with jalapeno sausage are $30.99 if you get them with the beef filet. However, the fajitas are an elaborate display of passion and art, and many would tell you they’re worth the price.

Flautas and Enchiladas

If you go to El Tiempo Cantina and order either the flautas or the enchiladas, you won’t be disappointed. The smoked brisket flautas topped with spicy avocado salsa are remarkable, and it’s only $13.49 for three of them. If you’re set on enchiladas, the suisas verdes enchiladas, your choice of chicken or carnitas with green chili and swiss cheese are incredible, as are the spicy shrimp enchiladas with white cheeseand marisco cream or meatless red sauce.

Superb Sides

While many restaurants offer sides accompanying the main entrée, and while many Mexican restaurants offer rice and beans, there are times when the sides are, well, a side thought—rarely do you find a restaurant where the sides are just as good as the main meal. However, at El Tiempo Cantina, the charred beans and rice are amazing, and make sure to ask for an extra tortilla. The tortillas are homemade and some of the best in Houston.

Early Bird?

If you’re a morning person and love a big breakfast upon waking, you might want to check out El Tiempo Cantina for breakfast rather than lunch or dinner (or all three). The breakfast menu is pretty eclectic, and diners can choose from the more traditional breakfast items, such as, pecan pancakes or oatmeal and fruit, or something more filling and authentic, such as the huevos and pork chops or the chilaquiles. Not only is the breakfast here great, but it’s also much more affordable than the dinner menu.

Throw a Party

If you’re planning a big event or need enough food to feed a large group, the fajita party pack goes highly recommended. Choose between beef, pork, chicken, or mixed fajitas for prices ranging between $15.99 to $22.99 per person. You can also buy things like rice, salsa, and even enchiladas in bulk.
